“This is the part I want to see; a world where everyone is happy. It is possible.” Such is the perspective of Samuel Alexio, the protagonist of the novel ‘Equally Different’ by young writer Menura de Silva.

‘Equally Different’ is 20-year-old Menura’s second book. His first ‘A Life Story’ was released when he was 14. He is currently following his undergraduate studies in Communication, Media and Film at the University of Windsor in Canada.

Inspired by a case study done for Geography back when he was in eighth grade, the novel came to life over four years (2018 – 2021). Originally, the story was to be set in Sri Lanka but shifting it to Rio de Janeiro would give it an international perspective, he felt.

This “independent project” features the life story of Alexio, who begins his journey in the slums of Rio, and advances up the ladder of success with the desire of implementing change in the world.

To Menura, the oxymoron ‘Equally Different’ signifies that “Regardless of how we see each other, we are all the same” denoting that whatever class an individual may belong to, the problems one encounters are common.

Through themes such as the effects of politics, the role of media and most importantly familial love, he spotlights the potential the voiceless have and the power of perseverance if they are given adequate opportunities.

Menura discovered his writing abilities when at Gateway College International, Colombo. As someone who “kept to himself” he expressed himself through pen and paper. “I just learnt that I’m good at expressing myself through literature. Being an author is a bonus!” he says. The process of writing was not easy. The first draft was done between 2018 and 2019, the second the following year, the final draft in 2021. The book was published on May 11 this year by Jam Fruit Tree Publications and is priced at Rs. 1250.

To other young writers, Menura advises; “Do yourself a favour and let your work speak for itself” encouraging them to read. “You cannot be a writer unless you read.”
