Govt. reviews no pay leave offer

The Government is currently re-examining the offer to state sector employees of five years no pay leave to enable them to take up jobs locally or abroad owing to the economic crisis.

“We have realised that some of the best public service officials have taken up the offer and gone abroad depriving the public sector of quality and competent officials. This is a serious situation since only those who are not so competent are left behind,” a senior official serving on a state committee to review applications for no pay leave, said.

The health sector has lost dozens of doctors while at the Ceylon Electricity Board at least 80 engineers have found jobs overseas during last year’s economic crisis. The same situation is prevailing in the education sector. The private sector including banks have also lost many professionals due to the brain drain.
