FTZ unions want transparency in new labour process

Factory worker unions want transparent process in the drafting of the labour law reforms without which they will not submit their proposals.

The Free Trade Zone and General Services Employees Union (FTZGSEU) cannot subscribe to a non-transparent and politically driven obscure exercise that is patently flawed and contrary to well-cherished principles and practices of tripartite engagement laid down by Conventions of the ILO, the union’s Secretary General Anton Marcus stated in a letter addressed to the Labour Ministry Secretary R.P.A. Wimalaweera dated May 23, 2023.

In the said letter the trade union representing mainly workers in the apparel sector and factory-related work in the Free Trade Zones (FTZ) have raised concerns over the inconsistencies and deficiencies in the application of the Conventions of the ILO adopted by the country.

In addition they believe that bringing in labour law reforms devoid of the input of all key stakeholders will result in a further squeezing of the below-average labour laws compelling more workers to seek employment abroad.

They also point out that there could be implications on obtaining approval to continue the EU GSP + trade concessions.

In this respect, it was pointed out that the status quo of the ‘worker stakeholder composition’ of the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) should be restored.

In addition, the NLAC needs to devise specific and transparent terms of reference with the technical assistance of the ILO specialists in order to subject the issue of reform and consistency of local laws with core Conventions of the ILO as a matter of priority to avoid placing Sri Lanka’s GSP + eligibility at risk.
