Eighteen people including a Parliamentarian were taken into custody by Jaffna police yesterday for violating a court order banning protests within city limits.

Ahila Ilankai Thamil Congress (AITC) MP Selvarajah Kajendren was among those who were arrested for staging a protests against the visit by President Ranil Wickremesinghe who was on a two-day visit to the North.

Earlier police secured a court order against the scheduled protests organised by Tamil political parties and students of the Jaffna University. The police argued any protest within Jaffna city limits would disturb the peace and events related to the opening of the India-funded state-of-the art cultural centre. Deputy Inspector General Manjula Senarathana said statements were being recorded from the arrested people.
