A domestic aide, apparently angry that she was not given permission to visit her home, set fire to the room of her employer, a member of the Kotte Municipal Council, and stole four gold rings, police said. Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna councilor Kancahna Pelpola was away when the incident happened. She had gone to meet the SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasma to face a disciplinary inquiry after she handed over nominations to contest the upcoming local council polls as an independent candidate.

The fire burnt her clothes and other items in the room. Council member Prabath Thushara told the council meeting on Thursday that Ms. Pelpola was unable to attend the meeting due to the fire in her house. Police arrested the 49-year-old domestic aide. Investigations have revealed that she had sold the rings
