A proposal to establish an aircraft disassembly and recycling operation at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport has been cleared by the Cabinet.

Under the project, a joint venture with a Hong-Kong-based company, aircraft which need to be dismantled will be broken down and reusable parts would be separated while the rest will be recycled.

Ports and Aviation Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra told the Sunday Times that initially a one-acre plot from the airport land would be leased out and, depending on the demand, expanded. He said the project would open the opportunity for other investors as well.

The secretary said the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and the Aviation Ministry had granted approval for the project which would bring in revenue in foreign exchange and create job opportunities.

Ministry officials and representatives from the Hong Kong company and its local partners will visit Mattala Airport tomorrow to select a location.

The project will enable Sri Lanka to enter into the aircraft-recycling market which has much growth potential as world airline fleets continue to grow while replacing inefficient aging aircraft in a responsible eco-friendly manner.

The initial investment required to establish the business has been estimated to be around US$ 250,000.
