Estimated expenses for the Independence Day celebrations were slashed by more than 50 percent from the original estimates, a senior official said.

The budget was cut down by reducing the number of rehearsal days, cultural events, and heavy military vehicles with high usage of fuel and reusing old tents, the official explained.

He said the original estimate of around Rs 400 million was eventually brought down to Rs 192 million.

Public Administration Ministry Secretary Neil Bandara Hapuhinna told the Sunday Times that cuts were also made in the expenses allocated to the Education Ministry and Cultural Ministry.

He said some of the tents used at the event would be used again at the next independence ceremony.

The final breakdown of the expenses was as follows: Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Ministry – Rs 40 million, Rs 10 million each for the Foreign Affairs, Education and Sports and Youth Affairs Ministries, Rs 55 million for the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs and Provincial Council, Rs 47 million for the Department of Public Works, Rs 2 million for the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and Rs 18 million for the Ceylon Electricity Board.
