After school, we all have different aspirations. Some require to have a university degree. For example, a young medical aspirant like yourself who wants to become a doctor must get a medical degree to pursue your passion. But the next question is, which university are you going to attend? And it is a question that carries enormous gravity since your choice of university will have the most significant impact on your life afterwards.

Undoubtedly, it’s everyone’s dream to attend a top-ranking university. But many factors come into play when enrolling at any university. If you were to register at a prestigious University, you would be taught by renowned lecturers and state-of-the-art facilities. You will have access to a tremendous number of resources to study and access a well-rounded student life. The conventions and events are held at such universities; multicultural social networking opens better student opportunities mainly due to the advanced clinical exposure opportunities are given to practise medicine in countries such as Australia, UK, USA, Canada and the European Union upon graduation. These are some of the many advantages of studying at a top-ranking university. But can a student experience these advantages without bearing the burden of high tuition fees? The simple answer is yes!

Typical destinations Sri Lankan students seek to pursue their medical education are countries such as Australia, UK, Belarus, Russia, Malaysia, India and Georgia. At ISC Education, we speak to hundreds of students and parents, and common reasons for selecting these destinations are as follows. Sri Lankan Medical Council (SLMC) and globally recognised universities, references from current medical students, family or relatives residing in these countries, an active Sri Lankan community, and a safe and conflict-free destination are few. As all these countries certainly have the above qualities, one aspect that differentiates each other is the cost factor.

The higher the cost, the higher the quality of education is a common myth. As multiple universities offer quality education despite their affordable cost factor. Each university’s cost will undoubtedly depend on the country’s cost of living. For example, countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, universities will cost a student approximately over 100 million LKR  (all-inclusive) for 5/6 years (MBBS/MD) of study whereas, in these countries it will cost respectively Russia: 25 – 50 million LKR  for 6 years (MD) of study, Malaysia: over 50 million LKR for 5 years (MBBS) of study, Georgia: over 35 million LKR for 6 years (MD) of study and Belarus: 16 – 22 million LKR for 6 years (MD) of study.

As you can see, Eastern European universities are more affordable. Therefore, they are the sort after-destinations among students who wants to pursue a medical education. It is essential to point out that during ERPM or other medical licensing examinations, students who tends to score well are predominantly from Eastern European countries, which is evident that although they are affordable in cost, their quality of education is one of the best internationally.

It is also vital to choose a reputed institution to apply to a medical university abroad as you will face numerous challenges during your 5/6-year study period and an institution that is transparent when it comes to charges you have to bear before and after departure so that you will not incur any unnecessary hidden cost during your study years. Therefore, selecting an institution that will offer guidance and transparency during admission and throughout your university career is essential.

At ISC Education, you will meet medical doctors with first-hand experience studying abroad and medical doctors who have travelled to each destination and university; therefore, they can guide you in selecting the ideal university based on your preference.
