Sri Lankan lasses opened their ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a close 7-wicket win over minnows United States, last afternoon at Benoni, South Africa.

USA won the toss, elected to bat but were limited to 96 for the loss of 9 wickets, leaving the Lankan lasses, what could be termed an easy target.

Yet, they were forced to fight until the penultimate over chasing, after early nerves were visible as they made it tight. However, an unbeaten 54-run stand between skipper Vishmi Gunaratne (34) and Manudi Nanayakkara (32) saw them home with an over to spare.

Chief scores:
  •   USA U-19 96 for 9 (20) (Ritu Priya Singh 22, Dewmi Wijeratne 3/11, Vidushika Perera 2/15)
  •   Sri Lanka U-19 100 for 3 (19) (Vishmi Gunaratne 34 n.o., Manudi Nanayakkara 32 n.o., Bhumika Bhadriraji 2/17)
