Visakha water polo team finishes 2022 with unbeaten record

The Visakha Vidyalaya water polo team created history when they achieved an unbeaten season of 2022, winning all encounters. The team won their annual encounter against Ladies’ College, Sri Lanka National Championship and the Sri Lanka Schools Water Polo Championship. The junior team won the Junior National Championship.

All the hard work and efforts were put into personal fitness and individual training paid dividends to the young and enthusiastic girls who were determined to reach the helm overcoming the two years of inactivity due to Covid.

Coached by Yashodha Wasalage, Tusari Ekanayake and Kalindu Hettiarachchi, the team has displayed immense talent and have set new standards for women’s water polo in Sri Lanka.

The won the National Aquatic Championship 2022 Water Polo title with a final score of 21-8 against OTSC ‘B’ team, as well as the Sri Lanka Schools Under-20 Girls Water Polo Championship with a final score of 5-3 against Bishop’s College.

In addition the Visakhians claimed the Sri Lanka Schools Under-16 Girls Championship with a final score of 21-1 against Bishop’s College while also winning the Junior National Aquatic Championship 2022 with a final score of 23-0 against Star Fish Aquatic Club.

In their annual traditional commitments, thy beat Ladies’ College in the Under-19 encounter with a final score of 17-13, while their Under-15 team settled to a 11-all draw against their Ladies’ College counterparts in the junior encounter.

Led by Siyara Mannapperuma, the senior team included Thiyumi Gunawardane, the vice captain, Ruvee Perera, Disuri de Zoysa, Yenuli Dharmapriya, Divya Aluthgama, Thurushka Hettigama, Isini Dharmathilake, Mehansa Jayarathne, Chamudi Sooriyabandara, Senethme Herath and Methasa Vidyarathne.

The junior team included Ruwanya Dadagamuwa, Arani Dorabawila, Kaushani Liyanarachchi, Rohansa Vidyarathne, Ranudi Weerawardhana, Navini Perera, Poojani Wijesinghe, Senara Gunarathne, Chanduli Rajapaksha, Vinudi Kankanamge, Yesali Jayakody, Sanaya Gunarathne, Anuddya Abeynayaka, Kaveesha Dadagamuwa, Onithi de Zoysa, Sathya Dorabarwila and Vinushi de Silva.

Thiyumi Gunawardena was awarded the trophy for Most Valuable Player (MVP) during the National Water Polo Championship 2022. The junior team took home both titles of Most Valuable Player (MVP) – Arani Dorabarwila and Most Goal Scorer – Ranudi Weerawardhana at the Junior National Water Polo Championship 2022.
