Despite a surge in COVID-19 cases in India and China, there is no immediate threat to Sri Lanka unless a new dangerous variant emerges, according to Sri Jayewardenepura University’s Microbiology Professor Neelika Malavige.

She stressed the need to strengthen Sri Lanka’s gene sequencing process to keep track of emerging variants.

She said India at present was not heading for potential new variants, but Indians were concerned because China was having a massive outbreak. The current SARs-Cov2 variants causing a large outbreak in China have been circulating for months in many other countries, including India. There were several of these new Omicron variations in Sri Lanka as well, but residents also had access to two vaccines, boosters, and additional natural infection-induced protection.

According to Prof. Malavige, other nations have not experienced what China is going through now.
