The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC)-hosted Sri Lanka Economic Summit (SLES) based on the theme “Resetting from Turmoil to Opportunity” set to open next month, will aim at garnering green financing for Sri Lanka.

“We are looking for sustainable financing opportunities. These are initially investments that are compliant with sustainable development goals. For investment professionals, a key motivation in the practice of considering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and sustainability are closely related. More and more investors are looking at ESC compliant companies as part of their financial analysis is to gain a fuller understanding of the companies in which they invest,” Manjula de Silva, Secretary General and CEO, CCC told the Business Times on Tuesday, noting that this will be among the focus areas explored under the session on ‘Opportunities for Sustainable Finance in the Economic Reset’.

Bankers said that ESG investing is becoming a dominant theme for mid-cap investors to consider as part of their overall investment strategies.

ESG investing screens companies based on criteria related to being pro-social, environmentally friendly, and with good corporate governance.

The summit, scheduled to be held on December 5 and 6 as a hybrid summit, at Shangri-La Hotel will have a plenary which will include a fireside chat with Senior Advisor, Equity Financing and Funds, Sustainable Finance Hub, UNDP, Artak Melkonyan, while the panel will comprise Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ms. Yvette Fernando,– Director General, Sustainable Development Council, Ms. Chamindry Saparamadu, former Chairman, the CCC, Rajendra Theagaraja with Chief Economist, CCC Shiran Fernando moderating.

Apart from this session, other sessions centre around key themes such as ‘Economic Reforms and Implications,’ ‘Implementing the Roadmap to SOE Reforms – Opportunities for the Private Sector,’ and ‘Resetting to Facilitate Growth’.

Presented in a new format this year, the inauguration will see President Ranil Wickremesinghe address the summit, followed by a Fireside Chat featuring the guest of honour, World Bank Regional Vice President for South Asia Region Martin Raiser, who will be interviewed by Economist and Centre for a Smart Future Co-founder Anushka Wijesinha. CCC Chairman Vish Govindasamy will deliver the welcome address.
