One escapee dies after admission to hospital, search on for others who fled

An inmate who was found in the dense forest in the area during search operations on Friday died after admission to hospital.

Polonnaruwa hospital  sources said he had died of starvation.

The army was looking for 9 more inmates who had fled into in the thicket of the Somawathie forest surrounding the camp.

On the day of the incident, on November 6, 300 inmates had clashed over the use of a bucket during which four inmates and an army officer sustained injuries. The injured were admitted to the Polonnaruwa hospital and in a stable condition.

Around 230 prisoners involved in the clash were arrested and are in remand custody.

Around 60 inmates fled from the centre at the time of the clash. However, in combined search operations conducted by the police and army several escapees were found and arrested, Major General Dharshana Hettiarachi said on Thursday.

It is suspected that nine others who are still missing would have escaped the area by hitchhiking in vehicles travelling to Polonnaruwa.

This is the second incident to occur at the centre within three months. The first was in June. One inmate died and around 500 escaped during that clash that erupted when an inmate died under mysterious circumstances.
