An interesting two-day conference in hybrid mode, physical and digital, on the theme ‘Discoveries and advances in physiology during challenging times’ is on this weekend (November 12 and 13) at the Mihilaka Medura, BMICH, Colombo.

The 8th Conference of the South Asian Association of Physiologists (SAAP) is being hosted by the Physiological Society of Sri Lanka (PSSL) which is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

The chief guest at the inauguration is former Vice Chancellor of University of Ruhuna and Emeritus Professor Susirith Mendis. The keynote address on ‘Low oxygen microenvironment and vascular pathophysiology’ is by Prof. Kusal Das, Chair Professor, BLDE University, Bijapur, India, who is the current SAAP President.

The 8th conference has been organised under the leadership of PSSL President Prof. Piyusha Atapattu and conference co-chairpersons, Prof. Dinithi Fernando and Prof. Indu Nanayakkara.

A high point of the main conference will be the orations held in memory of three renowned Sri Lankan Physiologists. The K.N. Seneviratne Oration will be delivered by Prof. Deepthi De Silva on ‘Insights into physiology through the study of rare genetic diseases’; the Valentine Basnayake Oration by Prof. Savithri Wimalasekara on ‘Physical activity and cardiopulmonary function in health and disease’ and the Carlo Fonseka Oration by Prof. Panduka Karunanayake on ‘Rediscovering physiology in contemporary medicine: The foundational insights of Claude Bernard’.

The PSSL was founded in 1987 and in 2008, joined hands with the main Physiological Societies of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal in establishing SAAP.

SAAP aims to build bonds among physiologists, scientists and students in physiology and allied sciences of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) member countries, while promoting physiology education and research for the advancement of physiological sciences.

It also networks with the International Union of Physiological Societies (IUPS) and the Federation of Asian Oceanian Physiological Societies (FAOPS) in promoting scientific and educational programmes.

The concept of ‘physiological association’ among SAARC countries was the brainchild of the late Prof. Arif Siddiqui from Pakistan under whose leadership the first SAAP conference was held in Islamabad, Pakistan.
