Inquiries into ragging at Peradeniya University underway
View(s):Two inquires, one of them by the Police and the other by university authorities, are underway into last week’s ragging incident of first year students by senior students of the Peradeniya University.
According to Deputy Vice Chancellor Terrence Madhujith, information has already been collected over the incident to bring to book the anti-social elements that are a slur on university education.
He said the modus operandi of those who rag new students online is to send pornographic material to new students, who are forced to send the material to other students—a new trend of ragging in the university.
Prof. Madhujith is of the opinion that ragging must stop for the betterment of the university and those who are attending the campus with the express purpose of education. He said the Inspector General of Police has directed all ragging complainants to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
In the meantime, according to a survey done by a group of deans, it was understood that around 20 undergraduates who have not completed their degrees only attend the university to rag new students.
They contend that the university should take action to either give a dead line to these students to complete their studies or cancel their studentship.
