Second booster in the US

The 2nd booster shots of either Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccines have been given the nod for Americans 50 years of age and older, by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This is an attempt to boost dwindling immunity against severe illness and death in the light of the rapidly-spreading Omicron variant BA.2 which is the dominant variant there now.

The FDA has stated that the eligible group could get the additional shot at least four months after the first booster.

Meanwhile, a study published two weeks ago in the peer-reviewed New England Journal of Medicine of the Massachusetts Medical Society titled ‘Efficacy of a Fourth Dose of Covid-19 mRNA Vaccine against Omicron’ looked at immunogenicity and safety of either Pfizer or Moderna vaccines administered 4 months after the third dose in a series of three Pfizer doses.

“Our data provide evidence that a fourth dose of mRNA vaccine is immunogenic, safe and somewhat efficacious (primarily against symptomatic disease). Our results suggest that maximal immunogenicity of mRNA vaccines is achieved after three doses and that antibody levels can be restored by a fourth dose,” it added.
