Telepsychiatry Service, a first in SL

In uplifting news to people with mental illness, the Psychiatric Unit of the Kandy National Hospital, seeing the dire need, had launched a pioneering Telepsychiatry Service, which is a first in this field in Sri Lanka.

Begun during the troubled times of lockdowns at the height of the pandemic, the Telepsychiatry Service holds a weekly clinic through WhatsApp video calls even now.

“We have treated about 150 patients including those with COVID-19 and those in quarantine. It’s very cost effective, convenient and acceptable,” said Dr. Shanika Ekanayake, adding that many people fell back on their treatment before the service was launched as they could not access hospitals due to travel restrictions and lockdowns.

She is happy that people who do not have Smartphones were borrowing them from family members or even neighbours to seek help from the Telepsychiatry Service which had been set afloat with the unstinting support of Dr. Gihan Abeywardena.

A study is underway to gauge the level of patient satisfaction and also clinical outcomes.
