Ginger and turmeric aplenty; farmers complain of low prices and severe losses

View(s):

Local turmeric and ginger cultivations have yielded bountiful harvests this season, resulting in a sharp fall in their market prices.

The Government earlier imposed a ban on importing turmeric and ginger, resulting in their prices rising sharply, with a kilo of raw turmeric and ginger, selling for more than Rs. 1000 a kilo.

However, the prices have now come down due to the successful local harvest.

These days, a kilo of raw turmeric and ginger are selling have been priced between   Rs. 110 and Rs. 300.

Traders attribute the large harvest to many farmers opting to grow these crops during the last cultivation season, given the severe shortage of fertiliser for other crops.   While low prices are good for consumers, turmeric and ginger growers lamented that all their efforts to grow the crops have come to nothing as they face severe losses from selling them at such low prices.
