A gazette notification is to be issued tomorrow, allowing for a 29 percent price increase on all essential and non-essential medicinal drugs, but will be effective only for two months, said State Minister Channa Jayasumana who is in charge of production, supply and regulation of pharmaceuticals.

At present, 60 essential medicines have a maximum retail price prescribed for them. The new gazette notification will allow for their prices to be increased by 29 percent while also allowing for a similar increase in the prices of non-essential drugs.

The gazette, though, will impose a condition on pharmaceutical importers preventing them from increasing prices again for 60 days irrespective of the fluctuation of the rupee against the US dollar, the State Minister said.

Accordingly, the rate that is fixed after the 29 percent increase will remain the same for two months and any further increase before that period expires will be illegal.
