In the aftermath of an unprecedented fuel price increase, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has proposed to the Government a revision in the electricity rates.
The proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Power and the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka. Accordingly the PUCSL has begun working out the revised rates to be submitted to the Government.

The CEB has pointed out that already state institutions and consumers owe it more than Rs 40 billion and the CEB losses have now exceeded Rs 250 billion.
The CEB has justified its case by pointing out that the fuel sector has already been permitted to increase prices due to losses suffered.

On Friday, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s CEYPETCO increased the price of Octane 92 petrol by Rs 77 to Rs 254 a litre while Octane 95 was increased by Rs 76 raising the price to Rs 283 a litre.

The Auto Diesel price was increased by Rs 55 a litre and the new price is Rs 176 while the Super Diesel price was increased by Rs 95 and the new rate is Rs 254 a litre.
