CTU: Unqualified acting principals in leading urban and rural schools

Around 2000 top principal positions in leading schools in the rural and urban sectors are being held by acting principals who do not have the appropriate qualifications, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said last week.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said these principals were political appointees and they continued to serve in the position irrespective of any change in Government.

As a result, several eligible and qualified teachers who passed on merit were unable to get proper posts and were posted as vice principals, he said.

“Teachers who passed exams and sat the

aptitude test for principal positions are appointed as vice principals because there are no vacancies in schools,” Mr Stalin said.

He said these principals belong to batches that passed in the years 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2019.

Mr Stalin called on the Government to take action to remove them and appoint the appropriate people to these posts.

“They should leave, and let the eligible people takeover,” Mr Stalin said.
