The University Grants Commission (UGC) is to introduce online exams for university students, UGC Chairman Sampath Amaratunga said recently.

He said arrangements have been made after consulting with the university vice chancellors, in view of the current COVID-19 situation. He said the online exam system will be launched next week.

Prof. Amaratunga said the universities had conducted 70,000 online sessions for students, whose lectures had been interrupted due to the COVID-19 situation.

He said they had assessed that the students have the capabilities of taking part in online exams. Under the plan practical examinations too would be conducted online.

Prof. Amaratunga said Rs. 200 million had been allocated for cloud computing, and the students would be given easy access to the online learning systems (LMS) for lectures and study materials.

Private educational institutions in Sri Lanka and foreign universities conduct online exams and the system had become popular due to the COVID-19 situation, the UGC Chairman said.
