Two research laboratories were opened this week, for the University of Jaffna’s Physics and Chemistry departments, under the patronage of the University’s Vice Chancellor Professor S. Srisatkunarajah.

The Laboratory for Energy Conversion and Storage (LECS) at the Department of Physics and the Chemistry Research Laboratory (CRL) at the Department of Chemistry had been fully renovated and upgraded with the necessary high-tech instruments under the World Bank’s AHEAD-DOR (Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development – Development Oriented Research) project.

The development of novel electrolyte and electrode materials for sodium-ion and magnesium-ion batteries were the primary goals of this project.

The research team composed of Dr. K. Vignarooban (Principal Investigator), Prof. K. Velauthamurty, Dr. G. Sashikesh and Mr S. Senthuran from the Jaffna University’s Faculty of Science and Dr. Athula Wijayasinghe from the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) in Kandy.

This project was an international collaborative work with the Arizona State University in the USA and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.
