The Education Ministry is to provide a nutritious food pack for selected school children as they are unable to continue with the free mid-day meal due to the COVID-19 situation, a senior Ministry official said.

Under this plan the food pack is to be provided for a three month period, from next week onwards.

The Ministry had taken into consideration the inability to provide free midday meals and the closure of canteens due to COVID-19.

An estimated 1.6 million students belonging to 7,800 schools will be entitled to the pack.

The official said the food pack will be prepared under health sector guidelines.
