Senior Jaffna journalist Dayabaran in hospital following accident

Senior journalist and Jaffna Press Club Convener Rathnam Dayabaran (48) was knocked down on Friday morning by a motorcyclist on the Jaffna-Point Padro Road near Udupidi Junction.

He was on his way to his office in Jaffan town, when he was knocked down from behind by another motorcycle. Mr. Dayabaran who lost consciousness was rushed to hospital by bystanders, as the unknown offender failed to stop or render assistance. Mr. Dayabaran was first taken to Achchuveli hospital and later transferred to Jaffana Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He was later moved to the Accident Care Unit, where he is said to be recovering.

Northern Province Governor Suren Raghvan visited Mr. Dayabaran in hospital and instructed the police to inquire into the matter as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Jaffna Deputy Inspector of Police Roshan Fernando told the Sunday Times, “We will have an impartial inquiry into the the matter without any delay”. Police are also seeking the assistance of the general public in the area to identify the motorcyclist and asked for any CCTV footage of the accident to be made available to the investigators.

Mr. Dayabaran is an outspoken Journalist who has been working for many international media organisations.
