Sri Lanka’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovation Lab – QBITS, set up under Private-Public Partnership (PPP) with the University of Moratuwa(UoM), was held on Thursday (23) at the UoM.

With the objective of building an intelligent ecosystem through an industry-academia collaboration, both CodeGen and the UoM is set to establish a knowledge base within the University itself, for Sri Lanka to capture a high value, niche market segment, designing complex algorithms, by our very own talent here in Sri Lanka. This collaboration introduces advanced research based culture in Sri Lanka, for multiple industries with multidisciplinary applications. QBITS lab will conduct high-end research, focusing on novel algorithms in AI, applied towards real world problems that will have a very high commercial value.

CodeGen International (Pvt) Ltd., pioneered the launch, in partnership with the UoM, and is the first ever fully funded PhD programme in the country.
The QBITS AI Lab, was declared open by UoM Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof A.K.W. Jayawardane and CodeGen Chief Executive Officer Dr Harsha Subasinghe, in the presence of the Deans of Faculties and relevant Heads of Departments of the UoM, along with Legal & Operations President Kusal Subasinghe and the Management of CodeGen.

The introduction of advanced technologies through intensive research, brings out unique algorithms based on mathematical modelling with cross disciplinary amalgamations such as mechanical, electronics and robotics, for the end product to be of extreme commercial value, different from everything else in the Market. QBITS is where complex problems, relevant to the future are looked at, by using optimisation techniques that go beyond the use of existing toolkits to forecast, maximize performance and decision-making processes. These research initiatives are fully funded by CodeGen, from college to admin fees, and remuneration of the student throughout the PhD.

“QBITS is now a benchmark for research based post graduate education; a knowledge enterprise, that is set to produce the best and most sought after, globally employable graduates through research, innovation and entrepreneurship. “The UoM is proud to be a custodian of a PPP that empowers and builds national innovation strategies through inter and multi-disciplinary alliances,” said UoM VC Prof A.K.W. Jayawardane.
