Rs 1,200-1,500 Vouchers for students to purchase shoes: Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to provide shoes for students in rural, remote and alienated schools islandwide. Cabinet Co-spokesman Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said the MoE’s modus operandi would be to provide Vouchers worth Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500 to purchase the shoes.

He added that, delays in the past, including last year, for the provision of shoes to over 600,000 students, was due to selecting a single supplier for the entire distribution islandwide, which took more than 6 months, and cost Rs 592.2 million last year. According to the Minister, the Government expects to spend over Rs 808.27 million under the new procedure, to provide shoes for students this year.
