The Ministry of Education is to recruit 15,000 teachers within the next six months for the 13-Year Compulsory Education Programme (CEP) to be implemented in 42 National schools islandwide, from this month. Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that, within the first 3 months, around 2,100 teachers will be recruited and others recruited in the following 3 months.

Under the CEP, 9 main subjects under the General Component and another 26 under the Applied Component have been introduced for the GCE Advanced Level for the Vocational stream. The Minister said the present teachers in the Education system cannot teach new subjects such as Aluminium Fabrication Studies, Software Development, Event Management etc. Hence, a new set of teachers have to be recruited after being given special training.

He mentioned that some of them would be taken from International Schools and other Private Education institutions, as those currently undergoing training at Govt Education institutions would be insufficient to fill the vacancies. He said the prospective teachers will be recruited from among those with the relevant Degree/Diplomas and with related work experience.

He added that the gazette notifications for the recruitments will be issued and the necessary infrastructure facilities too, are being constructed, as around 130,000 students will be provided Education under the new stream in 2018.
