The primary choir of De Mazenod College (DMC), Kandana, will be presenting their first concert ‘Thank you for the music” on June 17 at the school’s De La Salle Hall, starting at 6.00 pm.

A year ago these young students who are now between the ages of 7 and 10, did not have a choir in their school. ome of them would come together, perhaps to sing at a mass but they’ve come a long way since then.

The choir has officially been in existence since the middle of last year, under the careful guidance of Choral Director Nishantha Warnakulasuriya. Nishantha, together with the constant support of Rev. Sr. Teresa  Perera, the headmistress of the DMC Primary, Rev. Bro. Janaka Perera, the Principal of the school, Rev. Bro Pubudu Rajapaksa the Deputy Principal, Meadha Rajakaruna, the music teacher of the primary choir and Hashini Dulakshika have worked hard to prepare the students for their first show as a primary school choir.

The school believes in encouraging their talented youngsters to perform on stage, something that is new to them. The students have shown a keen interest to learn pieces of various genres, thus proving their dedication and versatility, Mr. Warnakulasuriya tells us.

He explains that these students who are keen never miss a practise.while fully dedicating themselves for a two hour practice session.  The name ‘Thank you for the music’ was chosen to depict their love for music and that’s just what they hope to showcase.

“One thing I found out, was that they were very keen to learn. Everything I taught them, was a new experience for them,” Mr. Warnakulasuriya tells us adding that the choir has been built from the ground up.

‘Thank you for the music’ will feature several songs, which were carefully chosen because they relate to children. Together, the choir hopes to bring out the story in each of these tunes.
Tickets for the show are priced at Rs.100 and are available on a free seating basis.
