As Sri Lankans, we all know the story of the ancient Indian epic Ramayana where Prince Rama travels to Sri Lanka to defeat the evil King Ravana and rescue his beloved wife Sita. However, this is not the only version of the story.

odern researchers feel that evidence supports a theory where Sita was actually the much loved daughter of King Ravana – abducted by him as the sight of his daughter living in a forest with the then exiled Prince Rama was too much to bear. Even the ancient texts differ from the much loved epic.

A translated version of the original text in Sanskrit to Tamil by poet Kambar portrays Ravana’s character as less demonic and more human. It is this version that the Tamil Manavar Sangam (Tamil Literary Society) of Ladies’ College, hopes to bring to the stage to celebrate their 85th anniversary.

Established in 1932 the society has evolved into one of the school’s most popular societies with a large membership.

The performance, titled ‘Ravana Rajyam’, will be a dance drama choreographed by Kalasoori Dhivya Sujen. The story will be brought to life through dance, with a narration in song. As such, the cast feels that the play will appeal to everyone. “There is very little narration as most of the story is narrated through dance so you don’t need to understand Tamil,” explains President of the society Mathura Easwaran.

With a cast of 100 students comprising both Sinhalese and Tamil students from Primary to Upper School, the performance has all of them working towards a common goal – ensuring the success of the drama. “All eyes are on us,” pipes in Vice President of the society Abinaya Sritharan. Teachers in charge of the Tamil Manavar Sangam- Kanimoly Devasuthan and Thevahi Piraveenraaj agree that the performance is an exciting event for the school.
