Sri Lanka skipper Tharaka Sampath Jayasinghe winning the toss and invited India to bat first. His plans were shattered when the Indian openers Vipul Patel and Vinay Sanap went on a leather hunt and was engaged in a mammoth first wicket partnership enabling the Indians to post a huge 391 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs. Patel scoring a lusty 139 including 15 hits to the ropes and three over it while Sanap played the secondary role to score 60 runs with nine fours and two sixes, Udaya Lakmal was the only Lankan bowler to keep the hard hitting Indians quiet to capture 4 wickets for 77 runs.

Sri Lankans chasing a seemingly impossible target of 392 were out for 238 in 48.3 overs. Besides skipper Jayasinghe who top scored with a fighting 56 with four fours and D. Sachin (34 with four fours) was the only other batsman to impress. Sijith and Vinay did the damage claiming three wickets each.
