One in every five houses checked by officials last year had potential mosquito breeding places, the Epidemiology Unit said.

The unit in response to a Right to Information Application filed by the Sunday Times said 2.2 million houses were checked by officials and 452,934 had potential mosquito breeding places.

Rs 80 million had been spent on anti-dengue campaigns carried out during last yearwhile 97, 592 red notices had been issued to both private and public institutions with the majority of them (86,867) being households. Red notices were also issued on 986 schools. The unit said Legal action would be taken against 12,940 private and public institutions–11,377 households, 81 schools, 109 government institutions and 29 public places.

The number of deaths from dengue were 90 while 55,150 cases were reported last year, the unit said.
