Pay hikes for Chief Justice, puisne judges and Court of Appeal judges and president

Salaries of the Chief Justice (CJ), puisne judges, the President and judges of the Court of Appeal will be revised and implemented in five phases, retrospective from January 2016.

Accordingly, the CJ’s salary from January 1, 2016, will be increased to Rs 145,000. With an annual increment of Rs 7,250, the CJ’s salary will be Rs 181,250 by 2020, according to a resolution tabled in Parliament by the Prime Minister.

The salaries of Supreme Court judges and the President of the Court of Appeal will be Rs 135,000, effective January 2016, while, by 2020, this will increase to Rs 168,750. Their annual increment will be Rs 6,750.

Salaries of the Court of Appeal judges will be Rs 131,500 as at January 2016, while they will be paid Rs 164,375 by January 2020, with an annual increment of Rs 6,575 over the five-year period.

The resolution has been presented under Article 108 (1) of the Constitution, and approved by the Cabinet.
