A team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been sent to Polonnaruwa to probe the murder of a sergeant driver attached to the Presidential Security Division (PSD).

The murdered officer was attached to the personal staff of PSD Head, Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) of Police S.M. Wickramasinghe. Police said his body had been found inside a house which belonged to the SDIG in Polonnaruwa New Town.

The victim, identified as 49-year-old Police Sergeant T. Wijenayake was found hacked to death. Police suspect that he had been killed on Friday night (16). The Sergeant was a resident of Polonnaruwa and had reportedly been acting as a caretaker of the house, which the SDIG would stay in when he came to Polonnaruwa.

Police sources also said there were signs of a struggle inside the house which appear to indicate that the victim had been set upon by several individuals.

The motive for the crime was not immediately clear and investigations are ongoing.
