Three Tamil speaking retired senior police officers are to be appointed as coordinating officers as part of the Government’s move to improve relations between the Police and the people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the Police Commission said yesterday.

Commission Secretary Ariyadasa Cooray said Retd. SSP Traffic K. Arasaratnam, Retd. SSP (Traffic) Ganeshanathan and Retd. SSP Selvarajah had been selected for the posts and they would serve the two provinces and the Police Academy.

Their appointments come following several complaints from Tamil-speaking people. They say they face difficulties in police stations when making complaints and often they are asked to sign police reports which they do not understand.

Police statistics show most of the 15,000-strong police personnel posted in the north cannot speak Tamil.

The Sunday Times learns that Mr. Arasaratnam will be posted to the Eastern Province, Mr. Ganeshanathan to the Northen Province and Mr. Selvarajah to the Police Academy in Negombo. Their contracts are for two years and, thereafter, renewable every six months.
