Heavy rains flood residential areas in Kalutara, Galle Districts

Heavy rains yesterday caused flooding in many residential areas in Kalutara and Galle Districts. Over 80 houses in Galle went under water, while low lying areas in Beruwela and Alutgama, such as Kalawela, Galhena, Moragalla, Pathanegoda, Methmunirajapura, Maligahena, Kalumodera and Malegamwela were adversely affected by the heavy rainfall in the area.

A person struck by lightning was admitted to Nagoda hospital in Kalutara, for treatment, while more than four houses were damaged by lightning in Kalawela, in the Beruwala area.Disaster Management Centre Deputy Director, Pradeep Kodippili said that, affected families have been advised to move to nearby safe places.
“The process of clearing water from houses in the Balapitiya area is already under way,” he said.

Highest rainfall recorded was 150 mm, in the Kalutara district, while Galle received the second highest rainfall of 27.1 mm last Friday night, said Meteorology Department Duty Forecaster, Sajith Wickremasooriya, A landslide in Galahena had damaged a house.

“Though the continuing inclement weather has made relief efforts difficult, all affected families would be given dry rations and other emergency items as short term relief,” said Beruwela District Secretary, Chathura Malraj.
