The Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­try will gaz­ette new guide­lines for the ad­mis­sion of stu­dents to Gov­ern­ment schools start­ing 2017, said Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Aki­la Vir­aj Kar­ia­wa­sam.

“The new sys­tem will em­pow­er Prin­ci­pals to play a de­cid­ing role when ad­mit­ting stu­dents, while a su­per­vi­so­ry body too will be ap­poin­ted to en­sure no ir­reg­u­lar­i­ties hap­pen dur­ing ad­mis­sion,” he said.Un­der the new sys­tem, pa­rents will be no­ti­fied the rea­sons be­hind the re­jec­tion of their ap­pli­ca­tion.

The Min­is­ter ela­bo­ra­ted that many stu­dents failed to gain ad­mis­sion due to dis­putes over house own­er­ship, proof of res­i­den­cy in close prox­im­i­ty to the school, as well as the man­ner in which this prox­im­i­ty is cal­cu­la­ted. These will be changed to make the sys­tem a fair­er one, he add­ed.

Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­try Sec­re­ta­ry, Up­a­li Mar­a­singhe said the views of pa­rents, prin­ci­pals and oth­er in­ter­es­ted groups will be sought be­fore the new gaz­ette is is­sued. “Grade 1 ad­mis­sions for 2016 now un­der way, will al­so see mi­nor changes to the sys­tem adap­ted un­der the pre­vi­ous gov­ern­ment,” he add­ed.

“We on­ly plan­ned for the 100-Day pro­gramme, hence, long term changes will take more time to fi­nal­ise,” he add­ed.
