Royal beat Dharmaraja by 17-5 after leading 7-5 at halftime in a gruelling Singer Schools Under-20 Division I ‘A’ rugby game played at the Bogambara stadium in Kandy yesterday. Royal scored from two converted tries and a penalty against an unconverted try by the Rajans.
Five minutes after the first whistle Royal skipper Bhanuka Gamage went through the Rajans’ defence to score the first try for the visitors while fly-half Ayendra Subasinghe added extra points. The home team responded quickly with a try off winger Hurigolla which went unconverted and eventually became their solitary try of the game.

With the halftime going 7-5 in favour of Royal, they went on to dominate the second half despite an attacking Dharmaraja unit. Lock forward Umesh Madushan gave the home team further boost to their effort with a try which was converted by Subasinghe, who finished the game with seven points after a late penalty. Science through
Science travelled up to Nittawela to record a hard-fought 36-27 win against St. Anthony’s. Science scored from five tries, four conversions and a penalty while the hosts responded with four tries, two conversions and a penalty. Aruna Rankothge refereed.
