The 16th President’s Cup Carrom Championship organised and conducted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka commenced at the Carrom Federation last weekend saw Nishantha Fernando partnered by Lahiru Eshan emerging champs in the Men’s Doubles event.

In the Men’s Doubles quarter-finals M. Sheriffdeen and Charith Madusanka were given a tough time by Udesh Chandima and Hasitha Anuradha to find slot a in the semi-finals while the other three pairs didn’t find things difficult in entering the semi-finals.

Champions Nishantha Fernando and Lahiru Eshan had to fight all the way to the helm as both of them had to face stiff opposition in the semi-finals and in the finals as both events went into the wire.

In the Women’s Singles favourites Joseph Roshita, Arosha Wickremasinghe, Madushika Kanchanamala and Chalani Lakmali reserved their berths in the semi-finals. In the Women’s Doubles Joseph Roshita/Chalani Lakmali will meet Buddhini Dias/Mainsadi Laknara in the first semi-finals while Maduwanthi Gunadasa/Madusha Vitana meet Madushika Kanchanamala/Joseph Dilka in the second semi-final.

Quarter-finals: (1) Chamil Cooray/Brindly Wickremasinghe beat Gihan Chamara/Kaveen Nimneth 25/5, 25/21; (2) Nishantha Fernando/Lahiru Eshan beat Sasrika Mutunayake/Minoj Ravinue 25/4, 25/6; (3) M. Sheriffdeen/Charith Madusanka beat Udesh Chandima/Hasitha Anuradha 25/23, 24/25, 25/13; (4) Dimal Senaratne/Lahiru Perera beat R.A.J. Wickremasinghe/K.S.P. Alwis 25/11, 25/18.
Semi-finals: (1) Nishantha Fernando/Lahiru Eshan beat Chamil Cooray/Brindly Wickremasinghe 7/25, 25/14, 25/24; (2) Dimal Senaratne/Lahiru Perera beat M. Sheriffdeen/Charith Madusanka 25/24, 25/17

Dissanayake/Wijeratne 25/00; (2) Buddhini Dias/Minsadi Laknara beat Chamathka Navoji/Hansini Sameeksha 25/1; (3) Maduwanthi Gunadasa/Madusha Vithana beat Kusalya Vidanagama/Sumalya Vidanagama 25/16; (4) Madushika Kanchanamala/Joseph Dilka beat Detuni Nomaya/Lihini Angelica 25/22.
Semi-finals and finals willbe played later.

Women’s Singles
Quarter-finals: (1) Joseph Roshita beat Yasika Rahubadda 25/6, 25/5; (2) Arsha Wickremasinghe beat Kaushalya Vidanagama 25/11, 25/10; (3) Madushika Kanchanamala beat Detuni Nomaya 25/14, 9/25, 25/22; (4) Chalani Lakmali beat Buddhini Dias 25/09, 25/06.
For the first time semi-finals and finals of both men’s and women’s will be played in Akuressa at the Hotel Sasala later this month.
Men’s Singles matches will be played over this weekend at the Carrom Headquarters in Maharagama.
‘The Mid-Year Novices Carrom Tournament 2015’ which is only for non-rankers is the next carrom tournament. The closing date for entries for this tournament will be on April 30. Draw will be held on May 2 and the tournament will commence on May 9 and will be worked-off at the Carrom Federation Headquarters in Maharagama. Entry forms can be collected from Mrs. M.R.
