The Sri Lanka Foreign Service Association (SLFSA) has welcomed the emphasis placed by the new Government on the need to ‘restore the dignity and professionalism of Sri Lanka’s Foreign Service.

The Association said it commends the policy direction and guidance provided by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera in the conduct of Sri Lanka’s foreign relations, and is appreciative of the support extended by him and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith Perera, in the revival of the SLFSA.

“The decision taken by the Government under the 100-Day Programme to recall political appointees stationed at all levels in Sri Lanka’s overseas Missions, in keeping with the commitment to re-establish a respected Foreign Service free of political interference, is particularly significant and timely. Equally noteworthy is the Government’s resolve to maintain Heads of Mission appointments at a 70:30 ratio of career diplomats to political appointees,” an SLFSA statement said.

“The SLFSA is of the firm view that recognition of seniority and competence in making diplomatic appointments is vital for the successful conduct of the Government’s foreign policy and for the restoration of professionalism of Sri Lanka’s overseas Missions, bringing them on par with accepted international norms,” it further said.
