Withdraw circular on tapping parents for funds: CTSU to Education Ministry

The Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) has demanded the Education Ministry to withdraw the latest circular regarding collection of funds from parents, stating the circular indirectly encourages collection of money through the Central and Provincial Education ministries.

CTSU Secretary, Mahinda Jayasinghe said that the circular should be withdrawn or amended in a way that parents would not be charged in any other way except the approved school fees.

The Union questioned whether the new Government’s genuine intention is to gradually increase the allocation for Education up to 6%, or to follow their predecessors.

Mr Jayasinghe said that, if the present Government fails to implement the proposals suggested by the Education Minister, the Union will resort to trade union action along with other organisations such as the People’s Campaign to Protect Schools.

On Jan.29, the Education Ministry Secretary issued a new circular (No.05/2015) restricting improper collection of funds in schools.
