This week, President Maithripala Sirisena’s son-in-law, Thilina Suranjith was appointed Public Relations Officer to the Ministry of Defence, while Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe’s son, Rakitha Rajapakshe was made Media Secretary to the same ministry.

The Defence Ministry portfolio is held by President Sirisena. Mr Suranjith is married to the elder of his two daughters, Chathurika. Mr Rajapakshe worked closely with the President’s campaign team as Manager- Propaganda. He was a junior legal counsel in his father’s chambers.

Last month, President Sirisena- who won the election on a platform of good governance free of corruption and nepotism- appointed his brother, P.G. Kumarasinghe, Chairman- Sri Lanka Telecom, for which he was roundly criticised, but made no comment.
