Death by hacksaw for man who falls from bridge

A man died after sustaining a cut injury on his neck from a hacksaw blade after he fell from a makeshift bridge into a river in Godakawela, the Colombo Coroner’s Court was told this week.

On Wednesday (16), 32-year-old Somitige Athula Senaratne, a father of three from Godakawela in Ratnapura, was heading home from the market with his brother on a makeshift bridge which was 12 feet high, when he fell, the victim’s brother said.

Hittige Wipulasena, the victim’s brother said his brother first hit a rock and then an old hacksaw blade sticking upwards that cut his neck.
He was immediately rushed to the Ratnapura hospital and later transferred to the ICU of the National Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Mr. Wipulasena said the hacksaw blade was rusty and that his brother was bleeding profusely when he was rushed to hospital.
Colombo Additional Coroner Mohammad Ashroff Rumi said that death was due to excessive bleeding following wounds sustained in the fall.
