Kadawatha accident: Death toll rises to three

A six-year-old boy died while being treated at the Colombo National Hospital after he was seriously injured in an accident aton Mankada road in Kadawatha, a Coroner’s Court inquiry was told yesterday.

The boy, Nimesha Thathsara, a Grade 1 student of Kadawatha Mahabodhi School, was travelling in a three-wheeler with his family and a teacher when it collided with a lorry heading towards Colombo on Thursday. He was initially taken to the Ragama Hospital and then transferred to the Colombo National Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday night.

His father 36-year-old Indunil Prasath and sister eight-year-old Imasha Gimhani a student of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo, were pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, the teacher and the three-wheeler driver were rushed to the Ragama Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

It was revealed at the Coroner’s Court that the lorry was transporting coconut shells from Mundel to Colombo.

National Hospital JMO Dr. D.I.L. Rathnayake said the death of the boy was due to a damaged skull and cranio-cerebralInjuries caused by blunt force trauma as a result of the road accident.

Meanwhile the Colombo Additional Coroner Mohammad Ashroff Rumi issued an open verdict. He stated the two drivers of the vehicles involved in the accident were responsible for it. He also ordered the Kadawatha Police to get a report from the National Transportation Authority on the mental condition of the lorry driver.
