President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday that the Opposition members had made jocular remarks regarding the development activities undertaken by the Government.

“First they said they will turn the Magampura Port into a swimming pool. Then they said they will turn the Mattala Airport into a museum. Our development work has been treated as a joke by the Opposition,” the President said.

He, however, did not make any direct reference to the recent incidents at the Hambantota Port and Airport where five UNP MPs visiting these places had come under attack.

Instead the President said he requested people not to be unduly worried about that the Opposition’s plans to do when it comes into power because that will not become a reality anytime soon.

“No one can undo by force what has been done by others,” the President said.

He made these comments at Girandurukotte where he was the chief guest at a ceremony held to distribute land deeds among 5,500 Mahaweli settlers.

This is the third phase of the program under which a total of 45,000 land deeds will be granted to persons settled in the Mahaweli B and C zones.
