The approval of the Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa is needed to ban tuition classes for students on Poya days, Sundays and other days when important religious functions are held.

Consequent to a letter sent by the Buddhist Sasana and Religious Affairs Ministry, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake told a meeting of members of the Central Provincial Council, tuition classes would be banned on Poya Days, Sundays and other days when important religious functions are held.

The ban from 8 a.m to 2.30 p.m., is expected to come into force on May 1 after its approval by the Central Province Governor.

Thousands of young men and women attend tuition classes, in and around Kandy. They are taught on a large scale with the aid of audio visual systems.

It is learnt that some girls tell their parents or guardians they are going for tuition classes, but instead rendezvous with their boyfriends.
