The dormant National Council for Economic Development of Sri Lanka (NCED) was revived two weeks back after an absence of nearly four years with a meeting called by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sources at the President’s Office said that there was an exchange of views between member-economists, officials and the president on the state of the economy.

The last time the council, which comprises some eminent economists, secretaries to ministries including Dr. P.B. Jayasundera and Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, met was in 2009-2010. No meetings had been held thereafter despite many economic issues that required attention.
