The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) this week recorded Colombo Mayor, A.J.M. Muzammil’s statement over the burning of Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) files, a senior CCD official said.

He said that the Mayor’s statement was recorded after he lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police and called for an investigation into the incident which took place last month. Files belonging to the CMC were secretly set on fire at the Borella Cemetery on August 17 by Council workers.

“As the Mayor had complained that there are officials behind the burning of documents, we have recorded his statement as an initial step,” he said, adding that the CCD is in the process of fact-finding and recording statements from officials of the CMC.
Mayor Muzammil told the Sunday Times that he complained of the destruction of public documents as violating laws not only of the Municipal Council Ordinance, but also of the Penal Code, National Archives Law, Public Property Act and many other rules and regulations.

He said that destroying valuable evidence of fraudulent recruitments is a crime that needs to be dealt with by the police.
“The CCD is to question several other officials including Municipal Commissioner Badrani Jayawardane,” he said.
Meanwhile, CMC’s Internal Audit Dept’s report on the destruction of CMC files is yet to be released.

He said the National Archives Director has called for an explanation from the Municipal Commissioner as to how old documents were destroyed without prior permission of the Archives.
