A touch of Switzerland

Colombo had a taste of Switzerland when Swiss Ambassador Thomas Litscher hosted an evening reception at the Swiss Residence to mark Swiss National Day which fell on August 1.

Going back to schooldays!

S. Thomas Prep School, Colpetty, Batch of 1963-68 had their 50th anniversary reunion at Citrus Leisure Hotel, Hikkaduwa recently.
The old boys, wives and children had a rollicking time and caught up with mates from across the seas as well.
The Thomian spirit was very evident despite the broadened midriffs and receding hairlines.

Janashakthi awards ceremony

Janashakthi Insurance PLC held their Mid-Year Awards ceremony at the main ballroom of the Kingsbury Hotel. Pictured here are guests at the reception that followed.

25 years of Russel’s Tea

It was a silver jubilee celebration for Russel’s Tea as the company held a gala dinner dance and awards ceremony recently at the Colombo Hilton.

Sixty-one awards were given away, among them ‘Employee of the Year 2012 & 2013’, ‘Chef of the Year’, ‘Manager of the Year’ and ‘Most Experienced Tea Service Staff Member’. In a novel touch, the winners were brought to the stage accompanied by a Scottish bagpipe band.

The selection of the Russel’s King and Queen was another highlight of the night. Chief Operating Officer of Deutsche Bank Ruwanthi Fernando was the chief guest at this ceremony.

Groovy shades

Miss Sri Lanka for Miss World, Iresha Asanki and other models took the ramp to demonstrate the glamour of designer sunglasses from brands such as Roberto Cavalli, Just Cavalli and Prada. The fashion show and reception were hosted by Wickramarachchi Opticians  at their Ward Place premises.

It’s back: Glitz, glam and the competition

By Vinusha Paulraj

The Footwork International Dancesport Competition 2013 organised by Dharshan Wijesooriya is back for the seventh time –on September 1 at the Colombo Hilton.  The Dancesport competitions were initiated in 1993 by Dharshan, who is accredited by bodies such as the International Dance Teachers’ Association and the United Kingdom Alliance.

Given his global exposure gained when judging Dancesport competitions abroad, Dharshan saw the need for developing technique oriented teaching methods in Sri Lanka. The Footwork championships were started to encourage Sri Lankan dancers to improve and be exposed to global standards as many foreign teams also compete.

Look forward to an evening of intense competition accompanied by glitz and glamour, as both local and foreign dancers vie for the honours. The standard of dancing has been exceptionally high given that teams are judged by both local and foreign judges, says Dharshan.

Dance teachers too benefit from this exposure to constantly rising standards that help them to guide dancers accurately.
The competitions this year will include a “professional” category that allows even teachers and other dance professionals to compete. The foreign judges will also conduct workshops for dancers.

“Despite the misconception that dance is purely entertainment, these competitions strive to establish that dance is just as athletic as any other sport and this kind of dancing should be considered a sport. While the concept is not a new one abroad, Sri Lanka still needs to be exposed to it,” says Dharshan, who is working tirelessly towards achieving his goal of establishing dancesport as a recognised sport. If the state were to recognise it as a sport it could be better regulated and this would encourage the corporate sector to invest in this sport, just as they would invest in any other sport, he says.

Tickets are on sale at the Hilton.
