“Jazzin’ – Rhythm of the Soul” the annual concert of the Danceworld School of Modern, Jazz & Ballet was held for the seventh year on August 10 and 11 at the Lionel Wendt.

It was a thrilling night of hardcore, high-energy dancing just as promised by the school’s founder, director and producer of the show, Sureka Buell. This all-girl show was held as a tribute to her assistant teacher/choreographer, Deshana de Alwis, who will be going abroad for further studies. Proceeds from this two-day show will go to community outreach projects handled by the Lions Club of Havelock Town.

The evening saw 18 dance items of varying genres -contemporary, modern, jazz and street jazz and even a fusion dance of Kandyan and African tribal, choreographed to many well-known songs, chosen from popular movies or sung by famous artists. The performers ranged from the tender age of six to 20.

Some of the standout performances were Alexandra Burke’s ‘The Silence’ where three dancers in purple gave a glimpse into the heart of a young girl, a cha cha-jive fusion performed to the popular song ‘Save the last dance’ and ‘Reflection’ from the movie Mulan to which little girls displayed junior ballet at its best. A re-mix of another popular song ‘Candyland’ made the crowd cheer for more, while ‘Hot wings’, a song from the movie Rio, saw the little dancers produce a near-perfect impersonation of birds. Adele’s soulful ‘Someone like you’ was similarly well presented and ‘Girl on fire’ by Alicia Keys elicited the loudest cheers as Sureka herself danced with her students.

The stylish and tasteful costumes were made by Sureka’s mother, veteran costume designer Mithabi Gunawardene.  The evening drew to an end with a virtual show-stopper – as Las Vegas showgirls all aglitter, adorned with feathers danced to ‘Copacabana’ and descended from the stage to move among the audience. Now that’s entertainment!
